UTC Change of Age of Entry Consultation:
We will be consulting on our admission arrangements for UTC Plymouth for 2020/2021 through Plymouth City Council. The consultation will be live between 19 December 2018 and 31 January 2019. If you wish to find out about our policy or make any comment, please visit www.plymouth.gov.uk/admissionconsultation.
UTC Plymouth is a ‘University Technical College’. In September 2019 we will admit students from the age of 13 (Year-9) who have an interest or aptitude in science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The college has a focus on engineering courses for students up to the age of 19 who wish to go on to employment, apprenticeships or university with a STEM focus. The college has a very strong employer engagement with a range of manufacturing and technology business including the Royal Navy.
Plymouth City Council has identified a basic need for more places for Year-7 pupils in the city from 2020. We have also received a number of requests from the parents of pupils in some of the Reach South primary academies for transfer to the UTC at Year-7 rather than having to wait until Year-9.
Reach South Academy Trust has decided to respond to these requests by proposing to extend the age-range at UTC Plymouth from 13-19 to 11-19 from September 2020. We propose to admit 30 year-7 pupils in 2020 increasing to 60 year-7 pupils from 2021. Our proposal includes the principles that:
Year-7, 8 and 9 pupils will receive a broad and balanced curriculum but with a STEM focus.
Students not joining the UTC in Year-7 will still be able to apply for admission to the college at the start of Year-9 for GCSE and vocational courses; or at the start of the sixth-form in Year-12 for advanced courses.
The college has enough capacity in its current buildings to take the additional pupils without the need for new buildings. The former vocational centre building will be upgraded to create a safe and appropriate learning base for Year-7 and Year-8 pupils that is separate to the key stage 4 and sixth form bases.
If you wish to share your views with us on the proposals to extend the normal age of entry at UTC Plymouth from Year-9 to Year-7 from 2020, then please send your views by e-mail to firstname.lastname@example.org or by post to: Admissions Consultation for UTC Plymouth, UTC Plymouth, Park Avenue, Devonport, Plymouth PL1 4RL
