Learning Spaces Built for the Future

On Friday 6 February, we proudly celebrated the official opening of Millbay Academy newly redeveloped Athenaeum Wing, a transformational £8.1 million investment made possible by the Department for Education.
We were honoured to welcome VIP guests including Luke Pollard MP, our Trust CEO Tom Leverage, valued community partners, and of course the incredible Student Ambassadors, who helped lead the ribbon‑cutting ceremony.
The day included a tour around the fifteen new classrooms, modern office spaces, improved reception, and the innovative extension built on stilts, preserving outdoor space and creating a sheltered play area beneath.
These new facilities offer inspiring learning environments that will benefit both our students and the wider community for years to come.
In true Millbay style, guests were invited into the theatre for a high‑energy performance by Punks n’ Petticoats, the all‑female punk band, a perfect showcase of the creative spirit woven into the curriculum.
After consulting students across the school, the Student Leaders chose the name The Athenaeum Wing, recognising Plymouth’s rich local history, Millbays creative community, and commitment to academic excellence, art, and literature.
We are incredibly grateful to our construction teams, industry partners, staff, students, families, and everyone who helped make this vision a reality.
