The Springfields Academy Recognised Among Nation’s Best by Ofsted

Life-changing’ specialist school receives three ‘Exceptional’ ratings, the highest possible grade!

The Springfields Academy has been recognised as one of the country’s leading specialist schools, where “the effect on pupils’ outcomes and experiences is truly transformative.”

Ofsted inspectors awarded the highest possible ‘Exceptional’ rating in three areas, praising the school’s life-changing impact on autistic pupils and young people with additional needs.

The Ofsted team visited the Wiltshire school in April to assess safeguarding, inclusion, leadership and governance, personal development and wellbeing, achievement, attendance and behaviour, curriculum and teaching, and early years provision.

Ofsted now uses a new reporting system with a five-point scale rather than the previous single-word grades. The highest grade, ‘Exceptional’, is reserved for practice among the very best nationally, from which other schools and providers can learn.

The Springfields Academy achieved Exceptional ratings for Inclusion, Leadership and Governance, and Personal Development and Wellbeing, with all other areas judged as a Strong Standard, reflecting a school operating above expectations and delivering consistently high-quality provision.

Inspectors praised the school’s inclusive culture, noting that leaders and staff “work tirelessly to identify and remove” barriers to learning so that every pupil can succeed. They highlighted how the school’s work with families and the wider community has created a culture that “ensures that pupils can flourish”.

The report recognised the impact of the school’s leadership team, highlighting their commitment to providing every pupil with the highest quality education possible. Inspectors noted that leaders’ work has led to “life-changing outcomes for pupils” and described the effect on pupils’ experiences and outcomes as “truly transformative”.

Ofsted also recognised Springfields’ influence beyond its own community, noting that “children and families across the country and beyond benefit from the competence rooted in this school”. Inspectors added that the school’s influence extends “far beyond its own walls”, supporting schools and organisations worldwide and helping to shape the next generation of teachers.

Personal development and wellbeing was recognised as Exceptional, with inspectors praising the school’s “unwavering focus on preparation for adulthood”. They highlighted the carefully planned support that helps pupils develop confidence, independence and self-awareness, alongside a wide range of enrichment opportunities including residential trips, clubs and leadership opportunities.

Achievement was recognised as a Strong Standard, with inspectors noting that pupils thrive on personalised learning pathways and make accelerated progress towards ambitious targets. The report highlighted strong outcomes in communication and early reading, with pupils building resilience, independence and the skills needed for their next steps.

The curriculum and quality of teaching were also praised, with inspectors highlighting the school’s broad and ambitious curriculum and the highly individualised pathways designed around each pupil’s needs. They noted that teaching is characterised by clear routines, highly effective modelling and carefully matched support that enables pupils to build securely on prior learning.

Attendance and behaviour were recognised as strengths, with inspectors noting that many pupils arrive having experienced difficulties in previous educational settings but go on to enjoy school, improve their attendance and develop positive attitudes to learning. Behaviour was described as “consistently positive”, with pupils reporting that they feel safe and happy at school.

Other comments in the report included:

• “The school's motto, ‘building safe independent lives’, is more than words. It is the driving force behind everything leaders and staff do.

• “Pupils gain the skills, confidence and resilience they need to flourish in modern Britain.”

• “A deep culture of belonging ensures pupils feel motivated and eager to attend school regularly.

• “Meaningful relationships lie at the heart of the school’s commitment to provide pupils with the help they need to progress and thrive.

• “Pupils achieve very well from their differing starting points.”

Last year, The Springfields Academy, part of Reach South Academy Trust, was re-accredited with the National Autistic Society (NAS) Advanced Specialist Award for a second time, a rare achievement for a school.

Nicola Whitcombe, Headteacher at The Springfields Academy, said:
“We are incredibly proud of our pupils, staff and families, whose dedication and care make Springfields such a special place. The recognition from Ofsted reflects the work that happens here every day, supporting young people to grow in confidence, develop independence and achieve outcomes that genuinely transform their futures. It is a privilege to see the difference this makes for our pupils.”

Tom Leverage, CEO at Reach South Academy Trust, said:
“This is a fantastic recognition of The Springfields Academy and the exceptional work taking place across the school. The Ofsted report highlights the strength of leadership, the quality of provision and the transformative impact being achieved for pupils with additional needs.

“Importantly, it also recognises the school’s role in sharing its expertise and practice more widely, supporting schools not only across the Trust and nationally, but also increasingly worldwide. We are incredibly proud of the team and the contribution they are making to wider specialist education.”
